WATCH: Journey to Chris Hadfield’s landing site in Kazakhstan

Space exploration is fascinating enough on its own, but it’s never been as engaging for people here on Earth as it has been for the past five months. Canadian astronaut Cmdr. Chris Hadfield’s time on board the International Space Station will be remembered for his snapshots from space, science lessons from the stars and his ongoing interaction with his hundreds of thousands of social media followers. And, of course, the cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” that won’t soon be forgotten. For 144 days on board the ISS, his return to Earth marked the end of a shared adventure in space – a journey people got to take part in, in a way they hadn’t ever before. Global News Asia Correspondent Paul Johnson and cameraman Nicolas Bock were the only North American journalists to have travelled to the remote Kazakhstan landing site, where Hadfield and his space station compatriots (Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko and U.S. astronaut Thomas Marshburn) touched down in a Soyuz spacecraft the morning of May 14. WATCH: Cmdr. Hadfield’s son looks back at father’s time in space Johnson has covered a number of space landings and has met many of Canada’s exceptional astronauts. But, even he admits that Hadfield’s story is exceptional. “[Hadfield] seems to be somebody who is really conscious of the appeal of his own story and of using that to reach out to people to make them aware of the incredible things that are going on, on the International Space Station and just in the space program in general,” Johnson said.

English.news.cn   2012-02-17 06:12:23

VANCOUVER, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) – China and British Columbia should take the opportunity to strengthen ties and continue to improve cultural and trade relations while further promoting the strategic partnership between China and Canada, visiting Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said here Thursday.

At his meeting with Christy Clark, Premier of Canada’s British Columbia, Wang said Sino-Canadian relationship has been going very well in recent years with the bilateral mutual political trust deepened, trade relations improved and cultural exchanges active, which have benefited people of the both countries.

China always attaches importance to the exchanges and cooperation in all sectors between provinces and cities in China and Canada as local cooperation lays important foundation for the relationship between the two countries, Wang said. As fruitful achievements have been made in China-B.C. cooperation in the sectors including trade, investment, science and technology, culture, education and tourism, Wang said the two sides should take the opportunity to further promote the exchanges and cooperation in the fields of agriculture, forest, fishing, energy, mining, investment, infrastructural construction so as to further promote the strategic partnership between China and Canada.

Christy Clark described her meeting with Wang as an excellent opportunity to build on some of the successes resulting from her trade mission to China and explore further opportunities for co- operation between the two governments.

“B.C. values its strong relationships with China and we want to maximize B.C.’s potential as a destination for Chinese investment and as a North American hub for trans-Pacific trade, business and cultural exchange,” said Clark.

BEIJING – Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper wrapped up a visit to China by announcing Saturday that Beijing will loan two of giant pandas to Canadian zoos. The pandas are the first to travel to Canada in more than two decades.

Harper visited a zoo in Southwest China’s Chongqing municipality to say that the Chinese government is loaning the panda pair to Canada for the next 10 years, Harper’s press secretary Carl Vallee said.

News photos showed Harper looking on as his wife carried a squirming baby panda.

The pandas are expected to arrive in Canada early next year and will go to the Toronto and Calgary zoos for five years each.
